Emergency dredging of the access channel for boats into Lagos marina/ fishing docks is underway after various incidents involving craft running aground. DGRM, the national entity overseeing maritime services, says roughly 22,000 cubic metres of sediment will need to be removed in order to restore conditions of safety. This has been a problem flagged for longer than most people care to remember, but now it has reached a critical stage. The build-up of sediments has reduced the draft available for boats from what should be 4m to just 2m, says Correio da Manhã.
