Emergency calls to the national emergency number 112 in the Algarve were due to be received at a new centre as of yesterday (Thursday).
According to the Civil Governor of the Algarve, Silva Gomes, the new centre will cover all calls to 112 in the region and will lead to an improvement in the length of time it takes for a call to be answered.
The new modernised system will allow the emergency services to be contacted more efficiently and for the centre to accompany emergency operations.
A new website, www.112.pt, was also due to be launched on the internet.
