EMARP calls for beachgoers to use ashtrays

Municipal water company EMARP has installed 40 structures with ashtrays at Portimão beaches in a bid to prevent people from throwing their cigarette butts into the sand.

As the company points out, “this is a problem that still exists and negatively affects the environment and public health.”

Cigarette butts can take years to decompose, containing toxic chemical products which pollute the soil and water and represent a danger to marine animals and wildlife,” EMARP adds.
