Electronic monitoring

More people are subject to electronic monitoring in Portugal as assigned by courts, according to data from the Ministry of Justice. At the end of last year, 727 people used electronic monitoring bracelets, while in 2011, the number was 671 and in 2010, 508 people were subject to this control measure by the authorities. In 2012, most people using the device were resident in Lisbon and 99 cases related to domestic violence crimes. According to 2011 data, electronic monitoring costs the government €16.35 a day while an inmate costs €47.81.
