With still so many meetings ongoing behind the scenes, national media today is pointing to the Sundays of January 30 or February 6 as being the likely dates chosen by President Marcelo for legislative elections.
The president has yet to ‘dissolve parliament’ (this is expected to come next week), and from there elections must come within 55-60 days.
Both the government and centre-right PSD leader Rui Rio are pushing for elections “as soon as possible”, ideally before the middle of January, while Paulo Rangel – Mr Rio’s ‘opponent’ when it comes to internal elections due within the PSD party – wants them later in February, on the basis that he believes by then he will be leading the party that has traditionally always been ‘the other choice’ for the electorate.
