Elderly patient dies falling from hospital window in Coimbra

Coimbra University Hospital has opened an inquiry into how an elderly patient came to fall four floors to his death yesterday (Thursday) from an open window.

Hospital policy is that windows should remain closed at all times, with patients having no means to open them, Correio da Manhã explains.

While police are said to be confident that there is no indication of any kind of crime having been committed, the tragedy traumatised everyone involved.

“We suddenly heard a huge bang, and people started screaming,” a witness told the paper.

The elderly man was in the company of his son who “could not prevent the fall”.

Reanimation attempts proved fruitless and death was declared at the scene.
