Eight injured in boat crash in Cabanas de Tavira

Eight holidaymakers on two tourist boats in Cabanas de Tavira suffered injuries after the small vessels collided near the pier on Tuesday afternoon (August 4).

Four of the injured were taken to Faro hospital as a precaution, while the remainder suffered only minor injuries which were treated at the scene, port captain Ventura Borges told the Resident.

They are all said to be tourists, although their nationalities are not known.

The accident happened when one of the tour boats offering trips along the Natural Park of Ria Formosa crashed into the other which was already docked at the pier.

Maritime police are investigating whether the crash was caused by human error – in order words “distraction” – or mechanical failure.
