Eight arrested in Algarve drug bust

GNR have arrested eight people and seized drugs, weapons and munition as part of a special operation which took place last week in Loulé and Olhão.

Says the security force in a statement, the eight people arrested (seven men and one woman) “formed a group which allegedly operated a local drug trafficking network, which operated mainly in the borough of Olhão”.

Twelve searches were carried out following an investigation launched last year by Faro’s criminal investigation unit (NIC), 10 of them at houses and two in vehicles.

The tally of confiscated items includes 281 doses of hashish, 218 of cocaine and one of cannabis, as well as a fake firearm, an airgun, seven melee weapons and dozens of munitions.

Also seized were two motorcycles believed to have been stolen, a car, a variety of items believed to have been used in their drug trafficking schemes, mobile phones, manuscripts and €4,124 in cash.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 46 and all Portuguese except one who is Spanish, were due to be heard at Faro Court.
