Anyone who likes eatings eels will be disappointed to hear that these rarified delicacies are almost certainly going to be “off the menu” in Portugal when Brussels settles next year’s quotas next month.
With ‘all eyes’ on negotiations ongoing regarding sardine quotas, 2018 looks set to see reduction in authorised catch sizes for mackerel (carapau), hake (pescada) and European anchovy (biqueirão).
Eel catches are to be off-limits due to a population dip.
Just like the European study that warned recently that sardines should be left where they are this year due to serious sustainability threats, experts have told Brussels that there should be a moratorium on eel fishing “until there is clear proof” that the species’ numbers are improving.
