Education minister Tiago Brandão has announced that 9th year exams will not be going ahead in Portuguese public schools this year. The 9th year evaluations are used to signal whether or not pupils go on to what is called the 3º ciclo of State education, years 10-12. Instead of these exams, there will be diagnostic ‘studies’ to determine how much in the way of knowledge children have lost.
