EDP fast-forwards date for coal-fired plant closures

EDP has decided to close down its coal-fired power plants on the Iberian peninsula ‘ahead of time’, that is by January 2021. The plan – involving the Sines plant in Portugal and others in Spain – will cost the company an extra €100 million (before tax) say reports but has been made “bearing in mind the continued deterioration of market conditions for these installations during the first period of 2020”.

The idea for the Sines plant has always been for it to switch to the production of ‘green hydrogen, with the possibility of maritime exportation’ (click here).
