The probability of “importing Ebola” into Portugal is “low, but it is not zero”, health expert Graça Freitas told Rádio Renascença this week. Thus government authorities have developed a contingency plan, and drawn up a list of guidelines for travellers. The contingency plan includes the setting up of an Ebola hotline for telephone conferences if a patient is suspected of carrying the virus. As we went to press, more than 670 people had died in the latest virulent outbreak of Ebola which has spread to three West African countries. Health workers on the ground fear “the worst is yet to come”.
