eBay bans ivory auctions

ONLINE AUCTION house eBay is banning the sale of ivory products on its websites from 2009.

The online auction’s company said it would still allow the sale of some antique items which contain a small amount of ivory, such as pianos.

The decision was welcomed by international non-governmental organisations such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

The IFAW is said to be preparing a critical report of the auction site where it states that more than 4,000 ivory products have been listed on eBay.

Despite being protected, reports say around 20,000 elephants are illegally killed in Africa and Asia every year for their ivory.

Elephants are protected under the International Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species.
