Easter brings icon of Virgin back to city

Mãe Soberana, Our Lady of Piety, will be taken back down to the town of Loulé on Easter Sunday, part of the season’s religious celebrations.

The event will begin with the descent of the Mãe Soberana statue from the hill chapel where it is located and the religious procession will head towards São Francisco church.

The figure of the virgin will stay in the church for 15 days and will then go back to its hill chapel.

The popular event attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors to the city every year.
