EAST – a community school

MAKING A difference nationally, internationally and locally are the main aims of the new Eastern Algarve International School, EAST, which opened in Tavira in May.

EAST’s Director, Terry Payne, told a Rotary International meeting that as a community school, rather than a private school owned by the community, the school will adopt innovative school structures and operate a radical curriculum.

EAST, he said, aims to enhance the academic, emotional and physical development of its students. Healthy and carefully planned school meals are compulsory and, to promote healthy living in all its students, EAST has a large focus on sport. By widening students’ linguistic abilities, EAST prepares them to live in a global society.

Teaching students to use and understand technologies, including ICT is a key skill for 21st century living and one which EAST is keen to develop, as well as recognising the artistic and creative potential of every student.

EAST, is located five minutes north of Tavira at Bodega on the road to Cachopo.
