Earthquake, 2.4 magnitude, felt on Azores island of Terceira

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.4 on the Richter scale was felt today on the island of Terceira, in the Azores, the Seismic Information and Surveillance Centre of the Azores (CIVISA) reports. According to CIVISA, the earthquake was recorded at 06:44 local time (07:44 in Lisbon) and had its epicentre about four kilometres northeast of Santa Bárbara, on Terceira. According to information available so far, the earthquake was felt with a maximum intensity in the parishes of Santa Bárbara, Cinco Ribeiras, São Bartolomeu and Terra Chã (municipality of Angra do Heroísmo), and with a slightly lower intensity in the parishes of São Mateus da Calheta and São Pedro, also in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo. CIVISA explains the earthquake “is part of the ongoing seismovolcanic crisis on Terceira Island that had been going on since June 2022”.
