The long-awaited ETAR (water treatment plant) to finally fix pollution problems in Ria Formosa – problems that have dogged shellfishermen for years – may well be built ahead of schedule (originally planned for 2015/2016). The €14 million construction is being put out for tender soon, with the deadline for decision-making being the end of 2014. Meantime, €500,000 is being spent on cleaning up “illegal” discharges into the waste water system in Olhão.
