Early Music Festival

Academia de Música de Lagos is presenting the second Early Music Festival ‘Sons Antigos a Sul’, which aims to introduce this genre to wider public appreciation.

The first series in August 2012 gave privileged access to culturally and historically valuable chapels, affording original acoustic sound.

This cycle continues to utilise the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Graça of Sagres Fortress and the Ermida de Guadalupe in Vila do Bispo, both recognised as Portuguese heritage sites, but this year extends its venues to the courtyard of the Centro Cultural de Lagos from the end of July through to the end of August.

The music will be performed by various internationally acclaimed specialists on authentic instruments of several historical periods: viola de gamba, recorders, flutes, ancient cornets and clarinets are some examples, plus period song and dance.

The concerts form part of the international events to celebrate the European Year of the Citizen, 20 years of the Maastricht Treaty and particularly to honour 300 years of the Treaty of Utrecht 1713, which united many of the same nations. The aim is to demonstrate the rich but complex relationship between the cultures of these diverse countries.

Concerts are free but there is a small charge to enter the monuments.
