Portuguese nationals each produced an average of 513kgs of urban waste in 2020. That’s slightly above the European average of 505 kgs, but below ‘heavy hitters’ like Denmark and Luxembourg (producing 845kgs/ 790kgs respectively). The bad news is that production of urban waste generally is increasing: the European average has increased by an extra 4kgs per person since 2019, and sits at 38kgs above levels in 1995, reports Eurostat today.
