A total of 60,000 euros was raised for Algarve charities at the Vigia Group’s golf and leisure resort, Parque da Floresta, during its annual golfing fund-raiser between June 5 and 7.
The fund, supported mainly by local businesses, golf club members and guests of Parque da Floresta, near Lagos, was set up in 2006 to raise money for local charities at every available opportunity throughout the year.
However, once a year, supporters meet for a weekend of golf and entertainment and to raise funds. In four years, the charity fund weekend has raised more than 300,000 euros.
Charities that benefitted this year included NECI, a Luz-based school that provides day care for mentally and physically handicapped children from the areas covering Aljezur to Sagres, the Associação Oncológica do Algarve cancer care facilities, The Senior Citizens’ Day Centre in Figueira, Lagos Orphans, the Vila do Bispo fire brigade, and CRACEP, the Portimão-based re-education and support centre for the mentally handicapped, will also receive funds.
Paul Scholes, professional footballer for Manchester United and property owner at Parque da Floresta, supported the event and commended the efforts of the team behind the fund.
“Vigia’s vision is to establish this event as the most successful charity fundraiser in the Algarve golfing calendar and, in doing so, fulfilling the dreams of many worthwhile charities along the way,” he said.
On the first night, guests attended a welcome dinner with entertainment provided by UK comedian Kevin Orkian and local band Branded. Saturday night had a 1920s twist, and entertainment was provided by magician Matthew Robinson and speed painter Jennifer Allen, who produced two pictures that raised 6,300 euros.
Saturday’s main golf event consisted of an Am-Am and was won by José Negrão, Cipriano Pinto, Jean de Castro and António Teixeira.
A charity auction was held in the evening and included auction items such as a luxury seven-night holiday in Venice presented by Parque da Floresta property owners Wendy and Nick Parker, which raised 2,000 euros.
The event ended on Sunday with a fun Texas scramble followed by a hangover buffet.
This year, the main event sponsor was the Portuguese insurance company Tranquilidade, with Baptista Supermarket in Luz also contributing.
The Parque’s Golf Director Alan Hodson said: “I would like to thank everyone who has contributed or given up their free time to help us host what really was a terrific weekend.”
