Portuguese people spent more than €3.3 billion using the ATM network during the holiday period – November 25 and December 29 – in a total of 78.9 million purchases.
Data from SIBS – the company in charge of Portugal’s ATM (multibanco) system – showed that more money was spent last year compared to the same period in 2012, when nearly €3.2 million was recorded in ATM operations in a total of 75.4 million purchases.
But in terms of withdrawals from ‘multibanco’ machines, the amount dropped when compared to the previous year. In 2013, over €2.7 million was withdrawn in a total of 41.7 million operations, while in the previous year over €2.8 million was withdrawn in a total of 42 million withdrawals.
Further statistics show that €66 was the daily average amount of money withdrawn from an ATM by each individual (€67 in 2012), while €42 was the daily average amount spent at stores using the ‘multibanco’ service – in line with 2012’s amount.
