Albufeira’s popular Praia do Peneco is undergoing €1 million-worth of renovations which started this week and are expected to last until February 2022.
Albufeira Mayor José Carlos Rolo says the main goal of the revamp is to make the beach more “accessible, safe, attractive and inclusive” and easier for locals and tourists to enjoy.
“These works are fundamental to enhance this emblematic area of Albufeira, which has needed a deep intervention for a long time,” adds the mayor.
The project involves several improvements, such as revamping the beach’s stairs and walls, stabilising the beach’s cliffs, improving public lighting, setting up a boardwalk between the beach’s elevator and stairs and installing “support equipment” such as showers and foot-wash stations as well as new shady areas.
Certain areas will be inaccessible due to the works, such as the beach’s stairs. As an alternative, pedestrians will be able to use the nearby elevator, the elevator’s staircase or the tunnel. Parking in the area is also expected to be affected.
