A DUTCH woman is missing, feared drowned, after she was swept out to sea near Albufeira yesterday (Sunday, April 20) morning.
The woman, who has not been named, and her husband were apparently hit by a wave and swept out to sea.
The husband attempted to hold onto his wife but he was unable to maintain a grip and she fell into the water and disappeared.
At the time of the incident waves were said to be reaching heights of three metres and weather conditions were very bad.
According to Portuguese news agency Lusa, the man asked a taxi driver for help who in turn alerted the GNR about the situation.
A helicopter was called to help the search and scanned the area between 6am and 7am but was unable to find anything.
Rescuers were hoping that the low tide at 9am would help reveal the woman’s whereabouts but the woman remains missing.
