A Dutch tourist who drove through rough mountain tracks to explore the wild areas of forestland between Aljezur and Monchique was stranded without food or drink for 20 hours last week.
He had to drink rainwater during the night as he tried to make SOS calls for help after his hire car became bogged down in mud.
Police and fire brigade officers, with the support of a helicopter, tried without success, to locate the man after receiving his mobile phone 112 emergency calls.
The tourist, finally managed to walk to a road where he got a lift into Aljezur and his hire car was recovered by police and the municipal authorities the following day.
