A 72-year-old Dutch man is in hospital after being struck by shrapnel from shotgun shots during an armed raid at his Mexilhoeira Grande home.
Initial reports suggested the man had suffered just “minor injuries” but Correio da Manhã tabloid reports the man is being treated at Portimão Hospital. His life is not in danger, it adds.
The armed robbery happened on Tuesday at around 8pm.
The house where the man lives with his wife is located within a large property in an isolated, rural area of Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão.
According to CM, the pair of burglars fired shotgun shots to destroy the house’s lock.
It adds that the man was watching TV in the living room when he was hit by the shrapnel from the shots, which became lodged in his back.
The two men then tied the couple together and proceeded to steal around €100 in cash and two gold rings.
The woman, also 72, was able to free herself and call GNR police.
By the time police arrived, the men had escaped.
The investigation is now in the hands of PJ criminal police.
