A freak car accident has claimed the life of a long-term Dutch resident in Santa Catarina de Fonte do Bispo.
Anthonia Hamburger was driving an habitual route with husband Dardy on Saturday, just as their daughter, granddaughter and her own little baby had left after a visit.
The elderly couple who is understood to have lived in the area for 20 years used to drive to a nearby café after lunch for coffee. This time for no apparent reason their Toyota Starlet – driven by 68-year-old Anthonia – left the road at Corte Peso and somersaulted a few metres into a ditch.
Anthonia Hamburger was crushed by the weight of the car, while her 77-year-old husband escaped with light injuries and was only briefly treated in hospital.
According to reports, it was Dardy who called emergency services, which then transported him to Faro Hospital.
Meantime, family members returning to Holland learnt of the tragedy and returned to the Hamburger’s home.
GNR police and Tavira firemen are said to be investigating the circumstances of the accident.
