Dutch Ambassador supports initiative

Lisbon-based Ambassador of the Netherlands to Portugal, Henk Soeters, has welcomed the creation of Safe Communities Algarve.

Acting on behalf of the Ambassador, the Honorary Consul to the Netherlands, Annelies Reugebrink, said: “I support Safe Communities Algarve as, working closely with the local GNR, the Programa Residência Segura (Safe Residence Programme) will also improve the safety of Dutch residents.”

David Thomas, founder of Safe Communities Algarve, said he was pleased to receive this endorsement and support as the site was established to help promote crime prevention awareness to all communities residing and visiting the Algarve.

The Dutch community in the Algarve comprises around 20,000 residents and some have also been victims of crime.  To help residents and visitors alike, the Safe Communities Algarve now supports some 11 different languages either through downloads and links to crime prevention advice.

David said: “One recent example of this is excellent security advice to owners of unoccupied properties from the Netherlands Centre for Crime Prevention and Community Safety, as well as direct links to the Dutch National Police.”

Apart from her role as Honorary Consul to the Netherlands, Annelies Reugebrink also represents the village of Palmeiral near Loulé in the Safe Residence Programme.

She added that it was important for residents to help each other keep their areas a safe place to live by observing simple crime prevention advice and reporting suspicious activities to the GNR.
