Durão Barroso to be Great Vampire Squid’s Brexit advisor

Notoriously dubbed “the Great Vampire Squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money”, American investment group Goldman Sachs has announced that former Portuguese prime minister and ex-president of the European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso is now its new non-executive president.

And one of the first jobs he will have, writes Público today, is to give advice on Brexit.

Barroso is quoted as having told the Financial Times: “I know the European Union and also the economic environment of the United Kingdom. If my advice can be useful in these circumstances, I am ready to help.”

Goldman Sachs announced Barroso’s appointment after it had been passed by financial regulators and inquiries by the Bank of England.

As Público explains, Goldman Sachs’ base – despite the fact that it is American – is in London.

Barroso left his post as president of the EC in 2014 when he was substituted by the current president, Jean-Claude Juncker.
