Justin Durães-West

Durães-West art exhibition in Lisbon

Justin Durães-West is a contemporary artist and painter living and working in Portugal.

His latest large format work will be on display at Galeria da Livraria Miosótis, Avenida Rovisco Pais, in Lisbon from April 1 to May 5. Join the artist on the opening night on Saturday (April 1) at 7pm for some wine and nibbles.

Durães-West’s work is influenced by his fascination with exploration, both the metaphysical and physical, the ocean and the expanding universe. The contrast of the individual with human history. Picture yourself as an early explorer looking towards the horizon, the expectation, the responsibility, the physical and technological challenges. “We are on the edge of a new age of discovery as humankind progresses to become an interplanetary species, widely accepted as necessary for our generational survival,” he says.

Durães-West’s series of paintings, “Blue”, “Dark Matters” and “What” reflect this fascination, particularly in his exploration in the series “Dark Matters”, finding it “deeply moving how little we understand about the space that surrounds us and the possibilities therein. Dark matter is a component of the universe whose presence is discerned from its gravitational attraction rather than its luminosity. Dark matter makes up 30.1% of the matter-energy composition of the universe; the rest is dark energy (69.4%) and ‘ordinary’ visible matter (0.5%)”.

His new studio, under construction in the Alentejo, is intended to be a creative space where artists, technologists, digital nomads and computer programmers can stay, create, work and explore art in all its forms.

Galeria da Livraria Miosótis is open from 10am to 7pm, from Monday to Saturday. Pin location and opening times can be found by following this link https://www.duraeswest.com/exhibitions/
