Access to Alvor dunes is closed to traffic following recent complaints by environmental groups that hundreds of cars and motorhomes were parking on the protected area.
As was reported in last week’s edition of the Algarve Resident, the nature protection league in Portugal (LPN) accused the authorities of doing nothing to stop the illegal parking of vehicles on the natural dunes in Alvor, an area protected under the Natura 2000 environmental laws.
Last week, Quercus, another environmental group, demanded that the dirt track that leads to the dunes was shut.
The regional hydrographic administration (ARH) decided to close access to the dunes last Thursday.
