The new hotel will open this year
Duarte Gonçalves da Cunha has been appointed as General Manager of the first five-star hotel of the Viceroy brand in Portugal – the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, which is due to open later this year in Loulé.
Duarte Gonçalves da Cunha holds a degree in Hotel Management and Strategic Marketing from Les Roches Hotel Management School in Switzerland.
“With over 20 years of professional experience in the hospitality industry, he has been involved in several projects worldwide, building his career across four continents and nine countries. Throughout his career, he has worked in iconic Amanresorts hotels in four countries – Morocco, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Montenegro – and also has experience in Southern Spain at Finca Cortesin. Since 2020, Duarte Gonçalves da Cunha has been serving as the General Manager at Discovery Hotel Management, leading the Octant Douro team,” Ombria Algarve says in a statement to the press.
“Specialising in hotels with exceptional service standards, the new General Manager of Viceroy at Ombria Algarve stands out for his creative and innovative approach,” it adds.
The GM, on the other hand, says it is a “privilege to embrace this new challenge at a unique resort like Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, which combines excellence with sustainability, and has a deep respect for nature.”
Ombria Algarve adds that Gonçalves da Cunha “brings his extensive experience to Viceroy at Ombria Algarve with the goal of making the resort a landmark destination with distinctive mission and values.”
As the GM puts it, he believes in the “fundamental premise of nobility in serving others, both guests and the teams he integrates and leads. He sees Viceroy at Ombria Algarve as a “destination that will transform the resort paradigm in the Algarve, catering to those seeking authenticity, closeness to nature, and, above all, memorable experiences.”
Located 7km north of Loulé, Ombria Algarve, with an overall investment of around €300 million euros by the Finnish group Pontos, is a new low-density tourist and residential development.
The opening of the development’s first phase is expected later this year. The project includes the five-star hotel managed by the American chain Viceroy Hotels & Resorts – Viceroy at Ombria Algarve – with 76 rooms and 65 fully furnished and equipped T1 and T2 tourist apartments (80% of which are already sold), eight restaurants and bars, pools, a conference centre, spa, and kids club.
Ombria also features an 18-hole golf course, open to the public since 2023, designed by architect Jorge Santana da Silva, and two other phases of residences currently in the market – Oriole Village at Ombria and Alcedo Villas at Ombria – including apartments, townhouses, and detached houses ranging from T1 to T7.
