Officers from the Faro Judicial Police and the GNR recently identified and arrested a 24-year-old Englishman, who has been charged with arson. The man is accused of setting light to the countryside surrounding a residential area in Albufeira. The resulting fire burned half a hectare of land and threatened nearby houses. A spokesman from the police said that the man is believed to have been drunk when he started the fire with a cigarette lighter. He now awaits trial.
