Drownings since January hit 5-year record

52 people have drowned between January 1 and May 31 this year – more than 30 of them in the sea and in rivers. It is a 5-year record. Twenty of the victims drowned in the sea, 17 in rivers, eight in wells and two in dams. “The other drownings took place in swimming pools, a lake, a port and a water cistern”, reports SIC, adding that last year, drownings hit a 5-year ‘low’ with only 30 deaths. 2020 saw 48 people die; 2019 31. The worst of this year’s figure is that it only refers to five months in which typically few people go in the water.
