Drowning one of top child killers

Drowning is the second leading cause of death among children under the age of eight in Portugal.

On June 23 in an initiative to present drowning, parents, teachers, educators and nurses of Faro Hospital participated in a course to raise awareness about the danger of unattended swimming pools and the importance of teaching a child to swim.

Child drowning affects more male children than female and occurs mostly in private swimming pools without a life guard or child protection gates.

In 2011 Faro Hospital recorded eight child fatalities due to drowning.
