Carp are being removed from dams in the Alentejo in order to relieve pressure on populations of black bass and barbels as a result of the ongoing drought.
With 15 boroughs already restricted in their use of water, the move is going ahead from now until the end of August.
For the time being the cull restricted to two dams in Arraiolos and Alcácer do Sal, but a third may be included in Ourique.
Biologists explain that by removing small and medium sized carp, they can protect larger black bass and native barbels from dying through lack of oxygen in the water as levels continue to drop.
