Beekeepers of the Douro Internacional and the Mirandês Plateau in the north east of Portugal, are calling for direct support to deal with the food shortages for their bees, caused by the drought and changes in climate being felt throughout the north-east of the Trás-os-Montes region. “What we want is direct support to buy food for the bees, with a view to increasing honey production. If the weather conditions continue as they have been, from September onwards we’ll have to start feeding the apiaries because there isn’t enough food in the fields due to the drought to meet demand,” Vítor Ferreira, a technician from the Douro International Natural Park Beekeepers’ Association (AAPNDI), told Lusa today.
