PEOPLE VISITING Portugal can drive with their national driving licenses as long as they are at least 18 years old and stay for no longer than six months.
Changes in the Portuguese law from January 1, 2008 concerning driving licences (see The Resident edition of November 30) will not affect temporary visitors and tourists.
This rule applies to all EU licences and also includes Switzerland, Brazil and all countries with an International Agreement with Portugal until their owners become residents.
Foreign citizens who stay in Portugal after the six month period have 30 days to require an update form with the new Portuguese address and attach it to the driving licence as long as it is valid.
All UK driving licences are accepted but the old green format must be accompanied with an International Driving permit.
