An elderly man has been seriously injured today after the jeep he was driving was involved in an accident involving a Faro-Lagos train.
The accident happened just before 2pm at a level crossing close to the station of Estômbar, say reports.
For now, there are few details, other than the fact that the man – the only occupant of the vehicle – was ‘seriously hurt’ and rushed by ambulance to Faro Hospital.
The train was delayed for a period of about 40 minutes, and is then believed to have continued its journey westwards.
Contacted for a quote, IP (Infraestruturas de Portugal) “indicated that it had no details on the cause of the accident” but stressed that the automatic level crossing was “in perfect working condition”.
Reporting from the scene, CMTV filmed the jeep ‘almost completely destroyed’ in a ditch beside the railway lines.
As to the age of the driver, some reports put him in his 70s, others claim he is 94.
