Driver on trial pleads amnesia

A Portuguese man, who was remanded in custody following a truck rampage in Lagos in January 2009 which left one woman dead and seven other people injured, has said that he does not remember what happened.

The man went on trial at Lagos court on January 21, formally charged by the public ministry with a total of 19 crimes including murder, attempted murder, theft, disobedience and seven counts of dangerous driving (see the Algarve Resident editions January 24 and July 24, 2009).

According to daily national newspaper Correio da Manhã, during the trial the man said he didn’t know what happened on January 17 last year, adding that he had not taken drugs or been drinking on the day of the incident. The man remains in preventative custody until sentencing, which is due to take place at Lagos court on February 19.
