Dog stranded on cliff “for 15 days” rescued by firefighters

A dog that had been stranded on a cliff “for 15 days” near a river in Alvações do Corgo (Vila Real district) has been rescued by local firefighters. The cliff was inaccessible by land and the animal was spotted on top of a rock by a local farmer.

The rescue operations were carried out by the firefighting forces of Fontes, Santa Marta de Penaguião and Peso da Régua as well as a team of divers.

According to Jornal de Notícias, the animal was identified due to its microchip and taken home to its owners.

Said municipal civil protection boss Artur Cardoso, the dog was “severely emaciated” and “likely only survived because it was near water and had always been well looked after by its owners who had been searching for it”.
