Doctors, nurses and lawyers reject Socialist government’s plan to re-jig professional ‘Statutes’

After the blistering criticism – and resignation – of the Coordinator of Public Health Reform commission, Expresso reports that doctors, nurses and lawyers have joined in their absolute resolve to reject the Socialist government’s plan to meddle with their Statutes. All the criticisms outlined by Mário Jorge Neves in his letter of condemnation have been echoed by the 12 professional ‘orders’ which see the government’s intention as “seeking to dictate more, and have professional orders simply as consultative bodies” The law proposed by the PS majority government is due for presentation in parliament next week. If the 12 professional orders get their way, changes will have to be written into it. If they don’t, it could be the case of yet another diploma reaching the president’s desk for ‘promulgation’, or otherwise…
