Algarve’s hospitals and health centres welcome 136 training doctors

Doctors in the north of Portugal start two-day strike

Another day, another public sector worker strike: this time doctors in the north, members of SIM, the independent syndicate of doctors, are striking until midnight tomorrow over what they call “the lack of results” of negotiations with the government – and the government’s refusal to consider unions’ counter-proposals for improving salaries and conditions. Hugo Cadavez, SIM’s regional secretary general in the north stresses that recent years have seen an “unprecedented exit of doctors from the SNS State health service” (due to lack of consideration shown by the government). “Just in 2021 and 2022 more than 2,000 doctors have left. This is the principal motivation for the strike”, he told reporters.
