Doctors in Portugal to get LGBTI ‘best practices guidance’

Doctors in Portugal are to receive orientation on ‘best practices’ when dealing with LGBTI patients.

Say reports, the plan – never before adopted – seeks to create a form of guidebook, updating mentalities and expunging old labels.

Vasco Prazeres of the DGS health directorate told TSF radio that transexuality for instance will no longer be termed “gender dysphoria” but “gender incongruence”. And it will no longer be considered ‘an illness’.

The new strategy was presented today, 24-hours before doctors and nurses were due to hold simultaneously strikes throughout the country (click here).

Said Prazeres, the guidance is rooted in the principle of equality within a community “that has always been treated differently”.
