In spite of the government’s programme to ‘encourage doctors to work in the Algarve’, the latest recruitment drive focused on ‘urgently hiring four GPs’ to make up for numbers leaving regional health centres has closed with not one candidate coming forwards. Correio da Manhã adds that doctors in Faro’s pediatric department continue to struggle on dismally under-staffed, with many shifts the responsibility of only one doctor, when there should always be two on duty at the same time.
