Doctor who raped two patients in consulting room walks free

This troubling headline today refers to the decision of a judge to give a 76-year-old radiologist a suspended jail sentence after finding him guilty of two crimes of rape during ‘non-required vaginal examinations’. The case refers to incidents in a private hospital in Bragança between 2020 and 2021. The man has been given a two year eight month suspended sentence, during which time he is not allowed to exercise his professional activity on “patients of the female sex”. Prosecutors have asked that this stipulation be imposed immediately, rather than waiting for the verdict to pass through all the necessary judicial processes. The doctor has also been ordered to compensate both his victims in the sum of €5,000.
