ALGARVE HOSPITALS are facing shortages of doctors as the region is deemed unpopular to work in by medical professionals.
The bulk of medical training takes place in Lisbon and doctors feel that because of the distance to the capital, they are less likely to be able to further their careers if based in the Algarve.
Hospitals in the Algarve are desperately short of specialist doctors including plastic surgeons, neurologists and psychiatrists. It is hoped that the opening of the new central hospital of the Algarve in 2013 with state of the art facilities will encourage new doctors to the region.
