DIY dentistry

Three million people have resorted to DIY dentistry according to research conducted by the consumer watchdog Which?

The study, which questioned 2,631 adults in England, revealed that around 25 per cent of those attempting to care for their own teeth have tried to pull a tooth out with pliers and more than one in 10 have tied string around the tooth and a door handle to remove it.

Another 11 per cent have used household glue to stick down a crown or filling and six per cent have used chewing gum as an adhesive.

The study revealed that it is not clear why people do this, whether it is because they cannot find a dentist or because they fear of professional treatment.
