Dispute over dog cull

AN ANIMAL charity and a local council are at loggerheads over an order by the local veterinary authority to cull dozens of stray dogs.

Francisco Leal, Olhão Câmara president, has said the decision to introduce legislation that orders abandoned dogs to be killed after 15 days of detention is justified.

But the president of Liga Olhanense dos Amigos dos Animais Abandonados (LOAAA), Paula Águas, says the killings are being “indiscriminate, too numerous and with no compassion”.

In an effort to stop the cull, the LOAAA president has called on his 600 members to make a public protest, which is still to be scheduled.
