Disco-dodging tourists leap into Portugal’s Tejo River

An Italian and a Swede enjoying a night out in Lisbon ran up such a large bill at a local disco that they decided to make a run for it. With burly bouncers on their tail, the dodging duo took a spectacular leap into the River Tejo, and there they floundered until maritime police scooped them up almost half-an-hour later.
Both men, in their late 20s, were assisted by INEM and then taken to the nearby PSP police station.
The drama began after the pair realised their tab at Urban Beach disco, in the Santos area, topped €100.
According to news reports, they thought the only option was to run. The jumping part came when they realised they were being pursued by the disco’s security guards – and then matters complicated as a fog came down.
An official source said: “The fog made it difficult for agents to locate the fugitives.”
A police launch finally won the day, pulling both up from the murky waters half-an-hour after they had leapt in.
