Director General of Health Graça Freitas decorated with “Grande Cross of Order of Merit”

Outgoing director general of health Graça Freitas – a doctor who ‘led’ health authorities response to the pandemic while she herself was battling cancer – has been given a heroine’s ‘send-off’ at Infarmed (medicines authority) today, with a congratulatory speech from President Marcelo who decorated the 65-year-old with one of the country’s highest honours, the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit. Ms Freitas has agreed to stay in her position until a replacement is found. She herself gave a speech in which she said throughout the pandemic, she never lost sight of the doctors’ pledge to ‘first do no harm’. She added that she had never imagined she would be ‘decorated’ for simply doing her job.
